Like everybody else, I could see full well what was going on i.e. the Remainers on the Backbenches were seeking to take control of the whole Brexit process and the Speaker was seemingly allowing it. Although I had not exactly been flavour of the month on the Backbenches for some time, because I had been asking increasingly awkward questions of the Prime Minster and the Government about their Brexit policy, on this one occasion, when I stood up to challenge the Speaker, the Tory Backbenches were roaring me on, as I raised with him what he had done, in the following terms:

“Now, I have not been in this House as long as you have, Mr Speaker, but I have been here for 18 years and I have never known any Speaker to overrule a motion of the House of Commons. You have said again and again that you are a servant of this House, and we take you at your word. When people have challenged you in points of order, I have heard you say many times, “I cannot do x or y because I am bound by a motion of the House.” You have done that multiple times in my experience, so why are you overriding a motion of the House today?”
